Your Guide to Acne: What is it and how to Get Rid of it?

In Life Style by Editorial Staff0 CommentsLast Updated: October 15th, 2018

More than 40 million American citizens have acne, mostly young adults. It’s the most common health problem in the United States of America. However, acne should not be your worst nightmare, it happens to all of us at one point or another, and it’s completely human, nobody has to hide it or feel insecure about it…

What is acne?

A multitude of pores exist in every part of your skin all over your body except for the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet. Pores are basically tiny little openings (or holes) that produce a body’s natural oil called sebum. They also have the follicles responsible for the hair growth in your body.

Now, deep down in every hair follicle lies a gland called sebaceous, these glands are the production unit of the sebum that travels to the surface of your skin to keep it hydrated.

Acne appears when some of those pores get clogged; it’s a skin condition characterized by red swollen pimples on the skin. Pimples can be found on the face, neck and even the back and chest.

Why do people get acne?

We all know that all cells except for the cells of the nervous system regenerate, which means a number of them die and new ones come to life. When your skin cells die, they would normally rise to the surface of the pore and your body sheds them.

However, when your body begins to secrete a lot of sebum, your dead skin cells my stick together inside the pore and never make it to the surface, they just get trapped inside. The bad news is those cells don’t get trapped alone, they get some company; Bacteria.

The bacteria that live on the surface of our skin may also get inside the skin pores. Inside the pores, bacteria multiply very quickly; their huge number is what forces the pore to become inflamed (red and swollen).

The deeper the inflammation is the worst your skin would look that’s why a lot of people experience severe cases of acne such as acne cyst and nodule acne.

What causes the acne?

The reasons you have acne on your face can vary a lot, but we can always still blame it on hormones. Hormones like androgens increase in both young boys and girls during the puberty phase. The high amount of androgen causes an enlargement in the size of oil glands. According to Dr Mehmet Oz, MD, The root cause of oily skin can be connected to the increased hormone levels, especially during puberty.

However, fluctuations in hormone production can change even after puberty. Menstrual cycles, stress, and changes in emotional state can trigger hormonal changes that lead to oily skin.

Acne

Does everyone get acne?

Well, everyone could get acne. However, there are people who are susceptible to acne more than others. That’s because they have over-active sebaceous glands, and that’s just innate.

Why is the face area always oilier than the other parts of the body?

As claimed by Dr. Joshua Zeichner, MD, Certain body areas become oilier than others. For example, there’s a very high number of sebaceous glands on the face (especially the nose) which makes the face produces more oil than other parts of the body.

Myths and facts

“Bad” food causes acne

Umm… I don’t think so. No particular foods have been proven to be responsible for causing acne. Eating healthy is the best thing you could ever do, but no particular foods have direct links with this type of skin problems.

Stress causes acne

No, stress doesn’t cause acne, but, stress plays a major fact with making it worse.

Washing your hair helps with reducing oil amounts

True.  The oil in your scalp may travel to your face and clog your pore —and… Nobody wants that—so, better wash your hair, but not excessively.

Boys have oilier skin than girls

Yup! Boys generally do have oilier skin than girls which makes them more prone to acne.

Better use washcloth or sponge to clean my face

Nope, definitely not! Don’t think that washcloths or sponges have fewer amounts of bacteria than your fingers. They may just irritate your skin and make your breakout worse. The best way to put a cleanser on your face is to use your own fingers.

Best ways to treat acne

I highly recommend using this ACNE guide with tips, recommendations, videos and everything you need to know. IT’s a great guide that will help you to eliminate acne forever and keep your skin healthy, clear and amazing.

Now, let’s take a look at the different way to treat ACNE:

1. Medical ways

A number of medicines are available; however, their use depends on your acne’s type and its severity. They’re known to be antibiotics and they’re also good for unplugging the skin pores and reduce the amount of skin oil.

These medicines may require a topical use (gels and creams) or oral use (pills). They can be really helpful; however, they should only be taken after your doctor’s prescription.

Some of these drugs are:

Benzoyl peroxide (gel): Benzoyl peroxide gel is a keratolytic agent with antibacterial actions.

Salicylic acid: Topical salicylic acid is used to help clear and prevent pimples and skin blemishes in people who have acne.

Tetracycline: Tetracycline is an antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. Tetracycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and others.

Azelaic acid: Azelaic acid gel is used to clear the bumps, lesions, and swelling caused by rosacea (a skin disease that causes redness, flushing, and pimples on the face).

Accutane: Accutane is a form of vitamin A. It reduces the amount of oil released by oil glands in your skin, and helps your skin renew itself more quickly.

2. Natural ways

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a natural antibiotic, and it’s one of the best ways to get rid of acne naturally. It kills off bacteria and balances the PH of your skin, which is not something bacteria would survive with. Dilute the apple cider vinegar with water, and apply it on your face using a piece of cotton.

Cinnamon and honey

Cinnamon and honey can be a good mix for a remedy mask. Cinnamon has antimicrobial properties and we all know that honey is a natural antibiotic too. They both seem a little strange but they’re definitely worth a try.

Just mix them together till they form a kind of paste and apply the mask on your face. Rinse after 15 min.

Tea tree oil

Nope, you’re not adding more oil to your skin when you apply tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is not the same oil your skin naturally produces; in fact, it’s a solvent. It means it puts a limit to sebum and kills off bacteria that cause inflammation.

Ps: tea tree oil should never be swallowed and should be deluded before use because it’s very potent.

Banana peel

Banana peels contain a matter called lutein; it’s an antioxidant that helps a lot with reducing inflammation and swelling. Just rub in a circular motion for a while then rinse after 25 min or so. Also, Banana peel can help to reduce pimples on your face if you apply it twice a day.

Is Lemon Juice Good for acne?

The answer is yes, but, if you have some kind of allergy on your face, it’s better to ask your doctor about that.

How long do you leave the lemon juice on your face?

Don’t just over d it like many, 3 minutes or 4 is the maximum time. In reality, Lemon juice contains acids and they’re powerful, so, leaving acids too long on your skin will make it irritated.

3. Cut the bad habits and get rid of acne scars naturally

Stop picking!

According to Dr. Zeichner, instead of clearing the blockage out, you’re pushing it further down, and that can lead to scarring. So try to ignore the temptation to pick that pimple because you’re only making it worse.

Don’t wash too much

You need to know that acne is not caused by dirt, so stop washing your face over and over again. It’s just not good for your skin… It can strip it out of its natural essential oils which push it to produce even more oil.

Stop touching your face

Touching your face with your hands stimulates the glands to produce even more oil and brings more bacteria to your face so make sure you avoid touching your face.

Clean your phone

Using a dirty phone is only going to push bacteria that got on your phone while on call back into your skin pores.

Decrease the use of toners and exfoliants

Toners and exfoliants may irritate your skin and make it dry and cause redness which will only make acne appear worse than it is.

When should I consider visiting a dermatologist?

You should definitely consider going to a doctor if:

  • You feel like your case is pretty severe and cannot be managed naturally.
  • The medication you’re taking is not helping you at all (after a long use)
  • Your acne’s leaving severe scars
